Manchester United's controversial owners, the Glazer family, have reportedly turned down a series of offers.
A source at the club has claimed a group of investors from the Middle East failed with a £1.5 billion bid last year, comfortably above the £1.19 billion the side was estimated to be worth by Forbes magazine last month.
The Guardian claims a figure close to the Glazers has suggested their ownership of Manchester United is "like having the most beautiful house", adding: "They could sell that house, but why would they want to sell it if it were the most beautiful house around?"
However, supporters and the Red Knights consortium may question the timing of the leak, which could be an effort by the Americans to boost their negotiating power ahead of another anticipated attempt to buy the Old Trafford outfit this summer.
Fans' groups have called for an escalation of recent protests at the end-of-season match against Stoke City.
