Supporters of Chester City, wound up by the High Court earlier this year, have won the right to lease the former club's Deva Stadium.
Cheshire West and Chester Council rejected an offer from a group of Danish investors and has instead offered the Chester Fans United organisation a five-year tenancy at the ground, which housed Chester City from 1992 until their collapse in March.
Steve Robinson, the council's chief executive, said: "Without doubt, [Chester Fans United's] pride in club and city is unrivalled, as indeed would be the support for their proposal from the people of Chester and its surrounding area."
The fans, who are promising a new community-run side, declared themselves pleased at the local authority's move and commented that their priority is to give the city the "football club it deserves".
Chester Fans United are not the first breakaway supporters' group. Followers of Manchester United and Wimbledon, now MK Dons, have both formed rebel teams after controversial takeovers in recent years.
