Cardiff City given more time to pay taxes

Championship promotion challengers Cardiff City have had the deadline for repayment of a £1.9 million tax bill extended by the High Court.

The Bluebirds now have another 42 days to settle their arrears with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) taking the deadline to June 16th, despite being told at a hearing in March that they would receive no further stays of execution.

At the court appearance yesterday (May 5th), HMRC requested the adjournment to give Cardiff City more time. The tax office had earlier argued for the club to be wound up immediately, claiming the Welsh team to be "plainly insolvent".

However, with Malaysian tycoon Datuk Chan Tien Ghee believed to be on the verge of acquiring a 49 per cent stake in the side, they appear to be confident they can overcome their financial difficulties.

Cardiff City are preparing to face Leicester City in their playoff semi-final, with the first leg taking place at the Walkers Stadium on May 9th.
