Liverpool at crisis point, says expert

Debt-stricken English Premier League club Liverpool urgently need funding to avoid entering terminal decline, a football finance expert has suggested.

Square 1 Consulting chairman David Bick, an associate of takeover broker Keith Harris, claims he has been informed that unpopular American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks have set a prohibitive asking price for the Anfield side.

In an open letter published on the Anfield Road website, he said: "In very recent times, Liverpool has also been owned by people who have said much and delivered little of the stated vision. Replacing them is a very urgent imperative."

Mr Bick, a West Ham United supporter, also suggested the stadium is in need of refurbishment, with progress on the proposed move to nearby Stanley Park shuddering to a complete halt after then-chief executive Rick Parry placed it on hold two years ago.

After a disappointing season, speculation surrounding the future of manager Rafael Benitez has intensified in recent weeks.
