Internet search engine Yahoo has won the battle to show English Premier League highlights online from next season.

Yahoo will air five-minute highlights from each fixture from August, in a three-year agreement understood to have cost millions. Clips will be available to users from midnight on the day after the matches have been played.

English Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said: "The online highlights package is an important medium for supporters of all our clubs to be able to follow match action."

The firm has a similar deal to show snippets from American basketball games and it follows ESPN's pact with the English top flight to show highlights via mobile phones. Virgin Media was reported to be tussling with Yahoo for the online rights.

Earlier this month, it was reported that ESPN is seeking greater access to managers and players, similar to its American football output, for its FA Cup coverage next term.
