Red Knights takeover 'could succeed'

Manchester United supporter Fred Done claims the Red Knights consortium aiming to take control of the Old Trafford club have a genuine chance of completing a deal.

There had been suggestions that Salford-born Done, owner and co-founder of the Betfred chain of bookmakers, is involved with the group but although he denies this, he wishes them well.

Done has been a regular critic of the current Glazer regime and reiterated his desire to see the Americans removed, saying: "I think [the Red Knights] would be better for the club and it's a real possibility it could happen by the end of the year."

It was reported last week that the investors have been staging weekly meetings at London financial firm Nomura to hammer out the details of a potential bid, but they also said last month that no offer would be made before the end of the season.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side are currently one point behind league leaders Chelsea after a dramatic injury-time win over local rivals Manchester City last weekend.
