Smith dismayed by Rangers finances

Rangers manager Walter Smith has voiced deep concerns about financial cutbacks introduced as the Ibrox club continue to struggle to balance their books.

With debts estimated at around £30 million, the Scottish champions could be forced to sell players in the summer if fresh investment does not materialise and Smith is concerned about downsizing being imposed on his team.

Speaking after receiving the Clydesdale Bank manager of the year prize, he said: "We've handled it all right this season, but unless we get a little bit of help in terms of increasing our pool of players it'll be very difficult for us to recreate that again."

The 62-year-old admitted that even if Rangers go on to seal the league title and emerge from the UEFA Champions League qualifying stage, funding will remain tight and suggested the lack of squad depth is hurting the side as the season wears on.

After last weekend's 2-0 win over Hearts of Midlothian, Rangers sit 11 points clear of arch-rivals Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premier League.
