PFA chief Gordon Taylor has warned that some of England's top sides could be vulnerable if they do not get their finances in order.
Manchester United and Liverpool are believed to be saddled with debts totalling close to £1 billion between them and Taylor is worried that English Premier League clubs' arrears could hamper their long-term progress.
He claimed there were "serious financial problems" in the English game, adding: "When you see the debt levels of Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal, you feel if they do need to balance the books they are going to be open to a bid."
Taylor went on to describe the English Premier League's claim to be the world's best domestic competition as "offensive" to its rivals in Spain, Italy and Germany because of the national team's 44-year barren spell.
It was reported earlier in the week that the Red Knights consortium seeking to buy Manchester United is in the process of finalising a bid.
