Manchester United Supporters' Trust (MUST) vice-chairman Sean Bones believes the issue of fan ownership of clubs could potentially decide which party wins the general election.
Speaking to the Football-Talk website, Mr Bones said it would be "foolhardy" for politicians to ignore the will of football followers and suggested many could be roused from political apathy such is the strength of feeling surrounding the issue.
However, he added: "In some cases, there has been a dereliction of duty by the government in the way that football supporters have been looked after."
Mr Bones went on to repeat his backing for the mooted Red Knights takeover bid, claiming those involved were genuine fans of Manchester United, warning that the Glazer family risked forcing out hardcore supporters with current ticket prices.
Last month, the consortium said they would not make a formal offer for the Old Trafford club before the end of the season.
