Plymouth Argyle approve sale of Home Park

A controversial deal which will see Plymouth Argyle's stadium sold to a holding company has been given the green light at the club's annual general meeting.

It is hoped that the sale of the ground will raise £7.5 million which will then be invested into its continued redevelopment, turning it into a 46,000-seater venue fit for hosting FIFA World Cup internationals should England's bid for the 2018 tournament succeed.

Chairman Sir Roy Gardner said: "If we want to go forward with the upgrade to the stadium and develop it to be World Cup compliant, we have to take an action that will enable us to interest potential investors."

Plymouth Argyle will become a priority tenant after Home Park is sold and will pay a "market rent" for its use. The club posted a loss of £2.8 million last year and Paul Mariner's side currently sit second from bottom of the Championship table.
