Prime minister Gordon Brown has intervened to offer his support to troubled Scottish League Two side Cowdenbeath as they fight for their future.

The Scottish FA has ordered the club to increase the perimeter of the pitch at Central Park and Mr Brown, whose father was a Cowdenbeath supporter, is believed to have had his office contact them to see what assistance he can provide.

Cowdenbeath supporters' club president Rev Ron Ferguson voiced concerns over a possible ground-sharing arrangement with Livingston, saying: "We presume that the owners are losing money and want out, and the club could suffer."

The Blue Brazil's current home plays host to stock car racing as well as football and the SFA has deemed that its facilities are not up to scratch. It has been reported that as much as £200,000 could be needed.

However, Cowdenbeath are not the only Scottish club in financial strife. Rangers, the current subject of a possible fans' takeover bid, have reported debts of £30 million.
