Sepp Blatter, president of football's governing body FIFA, says the English Premier League must take steps to rid its clubs of their debt burden.
Speaking to CNN International, Blatter said it was "not correct" for English teams to spend beyond their means, although the two most indebted sides, Manchester United and Liverpool, find themselves in the red as a result of unpopular takeovers.
"I think something is wrong here with the Premier League," Blatter explained. "To let a club go into administration, this is not good."
However, he claimed FIFA was powerless to intervene and that it was the responsibility of the English Premier League to ensure clubs were not being run recklessly.
Earlier this week, UEFA boss Michel Platini added his backing to Labour proposals to allow supporters' groups to buy stakes of up to 25 per cent in their respective teams, describing the plan as "a great idea".
