Rangers boss 'open to supporters' takeover'

Rangers manager Walter Smith has responded positively to speculation that a supporters' group could mount a takeover bid for the Ibrox club.

It was reported this week that the Rangers Supporters' Trust is in the early stages of an attempt to buy out majority shareholder Sir David Murray, although any proposal would need to be underwritten by a consortium or wealthy individual.

Smith suggested to BBC Radio Scotland that the current British ownership model was outdated and said of the fans' rumoured offer: "It works at big clubs in Europe and it would be interesting to see how it translates to Scotland."

Rangers are currently ten points clear at the top of the Scottish Premier League with two games in hand, but are reportedly burdened with a £30 million debt.

An spokesman for English property speculator Andrew Ellis claimed earlier this month that he expected to have completed his acquisition of the club within three weeks.
