The Rangers Supporters Trust (RST) has confirmed it is working on plans to acquire Sir David Murray's majority shareholding at the club.
Spokesperson David Edgar said the RST had submitted an "exploratory document" with a view to taking control at Ibrox.
Reports have linked Jim McColl - believed to be the richest man in Scotland with a fortune of about £800 million - with the scheme.
However, Mr Edgar refused to say whether the Glasgow-born businessman has any involvement.
"We can't comment on speculation over any names mentioned with regard to underwriting or backing the scheme," he said.
It is understood that the RST would like to install a system of fan ownership at Rangers, although such a move would need to be underwritten by a wealthy investor or consortium.
The Glasgow club are currently ten points clear of Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premier League but have debts of approximately £31 million.
