Portsmouth deducted nine points

The English Premier League has confirmed that Portsmouth will receive a nine-point penalty following the club's slide into administration last month.

Although Andrew Andronikou, the administrator, has voiced plans to contest the deduction, a statement issued by the league today (March 17th) announced that the points would be docked "with immediate effect".

The penalty leaves Portsmouth rooted to the bottom of the table with ten points and nine games left to play, meaning they face almost certain relegation from the top flight.

HM Revenue & Customs officially dropped its challenge over the validity of the club's move into administration at the High Court on Tuesday, clearing the way for the deduction of points to be enforced.

Meanwhile, Cheshire-based investor Rob Lloyd has become the latest figure to be linked with a bid for the south coast outfit.

The property developer, who appeared in an episode of Channel 4's The Secret Millionaire last year, is fronting a consortium that recently opened talks with Andronikou.

Portsmouth face fellow relegation candidates Hull City at home on Saturday.
