Football Sponsors/ Sponsorship and Media
A new football sponsorship deal has been announced, with energy firm Npower taking over as the new Football League sponsor from the 2010/11 season.
The agreement will see Npower replace Coca-Cola as sponsor of the Championship, League One and League Two. According to the Guardian, the utilities company will pay £21 million over three years for the privilege.
Npower is also a major financial backer of cricket, having sponsored test matches in England since 2001. The company recently extended its test sponsorship deal until the end of the 2013 Ashes series.
The arrangement will come as a welcome boost to the 72 English clubs that ply their trade outside the top flight. It was reported last year that the Championship is the fourth most watched football division in Europe, ranking above Italy's Serie A.
This new contract will be one of the last acts of Lord Mawhinney as Football League chairman, as he vacates the role this month.
