Bristol City's plans for the development of a new £60 million stadium at Ashton Vale will not be scrapped by the government.
The Government Office for the South West has confirmed that it will not intervene over the club's proposals for the ground, which were approved by Bristol City Council last November.
Colin Sexstone, chief executive of Bristol City, said: "The decision by the Secretary of State to let Bristol City Council determine the application is a significant step forward."
Bristol City intend to build a state-of-the-art stadium on greenbelt land at Ashton Vale. The club's initial plan was for the ground to have a capacity of 30,000, though it has since been suggested that it could rise to 42,000.
The new ground will replace the Championship outfit's current home at Ashton Gate. Bristol has been selected as one of eleven prospective host cities should England's bid to stage the 2018 FIFA World Cup succeed.
