Lifelong Southampton supporter Herbert Taylor was named fan of the year at the Football League Awards in London last night (March 14th).
The 79-year-old works as a volunteer stadium tour guide at St Mary's and has rarely missed a home game since he started watching the south coast club in 1940.
While serving in the RAF during the 1950s, Mr Taylor would frequently hitchhike back to Southampton from bases around the country to attend matches.
"It is great to see the Football League including fans in an awards night For the first time in my life I am speechless," the supporter said after collecting his prize.
Other winners at the awards ceremony included Kevin Nolan of Newcastle United, who was named player of the year in the Championship.
Crystal Palace defender Nathaniel Clyne received the young player of the year award, while Scunthorpe United's The Iron was voted the best matchday programme.
Nicky Maynard of Bristol City won goal of the year for his spectacular volley against Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road on December 26th.
