Greg Clarke is set to succeed Lord Brian Mawhinney as chairman of the Football League, the organisation has announced.

According to a statement, the appointment of the former chief executive of Cable and Wireless Communications was formally ratified by board members at a meeting on Thursday (March 11th).

Lord Mawhinney is stepping down this month after seven years in the post and will become honorary president of the Football League.

A veteran of the telecoms industry, Mr Clarke is a Leicester City supporter and briefly served as the club's chairman in 2002.

He left his position as chief executive of O3b, the satellite broadband company backed by Google, last month.

Commenting on his new role, the 52-year-old told the Football League website: "As a lifelong football fan it is a privilege to serve the game in this capacity."

Mr Clarke added that his experience at Leicester City had given him "an insight into the challenges clubs face on a daily basis".

The new chairman's official start date is yet to be confirmed.
