Debt deadline extended for Southend United

Southend United have been given an additional 35 days to settle an outstanding tax bill with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

The extension was granted yesterday (March 10th) during a winding-up hearing at the High Court, which had been adjourned from February.

HMRC is believed to be seeking about £183,000 in unpaid debts from the League One club, although chairman Ron Martin has disputed the fee, claiming that the Shrimpers overpaid on an original bill of £2.1 million.

The Essex outfit now have until April 14th to resolve the issue.

In January, Martin accused the tax authority of "sending out winding-up petitions against football clubs like confetti".

According to the Guardian, senior officials at HMRC have said that the total outstanding tax debt of clubs in England's top four divisions currently stands at about £25 million.

As well as Southend United, Cardiff City, Crystal Palace, Notts County and Portsmouth have faced action from HMRC over non-payment of tax this year.
