Macclesfield Town will play against Hereford United this weekend, despite the sudden death of manager Keith Alexander earlier this week.

The 53-year-old died after collapsing at his home on Wednesday (March 3rd), with the England team later wearing black armbands as a mark of respect during their friendly with Egypt at Wembley.

Saturday's League Two fixture at Edgar Street had initially looked in doubt, but the decision was taken to go ahead with the game following discussions with Alexander's family and officials from both clubs.

The Cheshire club's assistant manager Gary Simpson insisted that Alexander would have wanted his team to play.

"Of course it is going to be a tough and emotional day," he said.

"Keith just loved the game and the last thing he would have wanted was to cause any fuss."

Born in Nottingham, Alexander made three international appearances for St Lucia during his playing career. He became the first black manager to work in the Football League when he took over at Lincoln City in 1993.
