Football clubs 'must reassess player salaries'

Top-flight football clubs must change the way that players are rewarded to avoid major problems in the future, according to a sports finance expert.

Speaking at the Soccerex event in Manchester on Tuesday (March 2nd), Dan Jones of advisory firm Deloitte said that football's model for paying wages is not found in other areas of business, the BBC reports.

He suggested that clubs should lower the basic salaries of their players and link pay more closely to performance, as banks have recently been encouraged to do.

Mr Jones added: "The thing about high player wages is they are often at loss-making clubs. There seems to be a mismatch there which you don't see in other parts of business."

The expert made his comments during the BBC's Football in the Red debate, which focused on the financial issues currently facing the sport.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill is due to speak at Soccerex today, when he will take part in a one-on-one interview with Matt Lorenzo of Sky Sports.
