Portsmouth make transfer plea to FIFA

Portsmouth are hoping to alleviate their financial difficulties by selling players outside the transfer window.

A spokesperson for the struggling south coast outfit confirmed yesterday (February 17th) that a request for special permission to conduct transfers has been submitted to FIFA.

However, it is thought that the world football governing body is extremely unlikely to make such an exception to its rules, which would be without precedent.

Currently eight points from safety at the bottom of the English Premier League, Portsmouth have debts of approximately £60 million and will be in court on March 1st to face a winding-up petition from HM Revenue & Customs.

Meanwhile, the Sun reports that West Ham United co-owner David Gold would be willing to lend Portsmouth £10 million, providing the loan was "endorsed" by league officials.

The businessman told the newspaper: "To see your club go into liquidation would be devastating. If I can do something to avoid that I'd be happy to do it as a football fan."
