The English Premier League has handed Wolverhampton Wanderers a £25,000 suspended fine for deliberately fielding an under-strength side.

Mick McCarthy's team selection for the club's trip to Manchester United in December caused controversy, with the manager making ten changes to his starting 11 from the previous fixture.

A statement issued by league confirmed that the action taken by the former Sunderland boss was deemed to be in breach of the rules.

McCarthy, whose side were beaten 3-0 in the game at Old Trafford, responded by saying that he accepts the verdict.

"It was never my intention to break any of the Premier League's rules, only to pick a team that was in the best position to get a result."

Meanwhile, Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey claimed that the incident should lead to a "wider discussion" of the issues surrounding squad rotation in the top flight.

McCarthy recalled nine players for his side's next game against Burnley on December 20th, which they won 2-0.
