Scottish brewer Tennent's has signed a three-year football sponsorship deal with Celtic and Rangers.

The agreement is thought to be worth £1.5 million a year to both Glasgow clubs and will see the lager brand replace Carling as the main shirt sponsor of the Old Firm.

Tennent's already sponsors the Scottish national team and is currently in talks with the Scottish Football Association over renewing that contract, which expires later this year.

Commenting on the Old Firm deal, managing director at Tennent's Mike Lees said: "We believe this partnership with Scotland's biggest and most successful football clubs takes our long-held strategy of sponsorship and investment in the game to the next level."

The announcement was also welcomed by Rangers chief executive Martin Bain, who claimed that the Tennent's brand has been "synonymous with Scottish football for decades".

However, the move has already been criticised by anti-alcohol campaigners, with Jack Law of Alcohol Focus Scotland telling the Sun that it is "inappropriate" for Celtic and Rangers to advertise a leading brewer.
