The first live match to be broadcast using 3D technology was greeted as a success by many football fans around the UK and Ireland.

Supporters in nine pubs wore plastic spectacles to bring an extra dimension to their viewing of the English Premier League clash between Arsenal and Manchester United on Sunday (January 31st).

"The best bit was when the players came out of the tunnel … they looked like they were running right past you," supporter John Cormican told the Guardian.

Michael Fulton, who watched the game in 3D at a pub in Dublin, described the experience as "absolutely fantastic".

The special 3D feed was a test broadcast for Sky TV's dedicated 3D channel, which is scheduled to go live by the end of the year.

According to reports, the broadcaster is planning to offer viewers one top-flight match a week in 3D from April.

Mark Chacksfield of Tech Radar told the gadget website T3.com that he believes 3D football will take off, although pubs may need to install bigger screens to make the most of the technology.

"I think it is more than a gimmick, it looks more in depth than I thought it was," he said.
