West Ham United owner makes case for salary cap

David Sullivan has suggested that a salary cap could be the answer to English football's financial woes.

The former Birmingham City owner recently took over at West Ham United alongside David Gold and has expressed concerns about the parlous state of many clubs' finances, including the east London outfit.

Speaking to the BBC, Sullivan claimed that the introduction of salary constraints could be "the only way to keep clubs solvent".

He added: "Maybe the ultimate solution is a wage cap. I've always been against it but I'm starting to swing towards it."

The businessman also said that the huge wealth of billionaire club owners such as Chelsea's Roman Abramovich and Sheikh Mansour at Manchester City has damaged the game.

After confirming their takeover at Upton Park last month, Sullivan and Gold announced that the club had debts totalling £110 million.

The duo said that West Ham United will aim to relocate to the Olympic Stadium in Stratford after the Games in 2012.
