This weekend's clash between Arsenal and Manchester United will be the first 3D screening of a live sports event, according to Sky TV.

The broadcaster has announced that the English Premier League game will be shown in 3D in a small number of selected pubs across the UK on Sunday (January 31st).

Football fans will wear special glasses to watch the action from the Emirates Stadium in an extra dimension.

According to a report from Sky News, representatives of the broadcaster recently travelled to the US to visit film director James Cameron, whose new box-office hit Avatar pioneers 3D techniques.

"James is a massive evangelist about 3D and he lives, breathes and eats 3D," said Darren Long, director of operations at Sky Sports.

The game between Arsenal and Manchester United will represent a test broadcast before Sky rolls out a full 3D service later this year.

FIFA recently announced a media rights deal with Sony to show 25 matches from this summer's FIFA World Cup in 3D.
