SFA 'could block naming rights plan'

The Scottish Football Association (SFA) is not expected to permit football teams to sell their naming rights.

Price comparison website comparethemarket.com has reportedly been discussing a £50,000 a year arrangement with Stirling Albion that would see the side renamed Stirling Albion Meerkats, as part of its successful Compare the Meerkat advertising initiative.

However, it is thought that the SFA will step in to block any such agreement.

The Stirling Albion Supporters' Trust is currently running the Buy Stirling Albion campaign as it seeks to bring much-needed investment to the Scottish Second Division outfit, which is estimated to be £1.5 million in debt.

Spokesperson Paul Goodwin told the Stirling Observer last week that the group had invited prospective buyer Gordon Mackay to their quarterly meeting on January 31st so that he can meet the fans of the club he is supposedly interested in acquiring.

A previous meeting with the sports surgeon was said to be "very positive".
