Liverpool are unlikely to receive any of the money made by co-owner Tom Hicks from his sale of the Texas Rangers Major League Baseball franchise, according to the press.
Media reports suggested that the English Premier League side will not benefit from the $500 million (£309 million) deal, with the club still in £237 million of debt.
Hicks and business partner George Gillett have been criticised heavily by supporters in recent months for failing to invest in the team since taking over at Anfield at the start of 2007.
Liverpool were on their way to being third in the English Premier League and runners-up in the UEFA Champions League when the duo made their acquisition.
However, they have slipped during their tenure and currently lie in sixth place domestically, having already been eliminated from Europe's premier competition this season.
It is thought that manager Rafael Benitez may have to sell some of his top players to raise funds and questions have already been asked over the club's ability to hold on to stars such as Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.
