Newcastle United confirm £10m sponsorship deal with Northern Rock

Newcastle United have renewed their football sponsorship deal with Northern Rock, the north-east bank that was placed under public ownership in 2008.

According to a statement from the Championship club, the new contract will begin from the start of the 2010-11 campaign and is worth a maximum of £10 million over four years.

Derek Llambias, managing director at St James' Park, said that the agreement "underpins the desire of two of the region's most well-known names to continue to work together".

However, confirmation of the deal was met with less enthusiasm elsewhere.

Writing in a blog post, Guardian football correspondent Louise Taylor described the sponsorship renewal as "an outrage" and "an insult to those Northern Rock shareholders who lost serious money in the crisis".

Meanwhile, Robin Ashby, founder of the Northern Rock Small Shareholders' Group, told the Daily Telegraph that he was "quite frankly gobsmacked" by the decision.

Newcastle United are now three points clear at the top of the Championship following their 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion last night (January 18th).
