Portsmouth 'treated as black sheep' by English Premier League

Portsmouth's executive director has criticised the English Premier League, claiming that it has been treating his club as "poor relations and the black sheep of the family".

Speaking before an unsuccessful attempt to block a winding-up petition issued by HM Revenue and Customs at the High Court today, Mark Jacob said that Portsmouth are due to be paid £2 million by the league and called for the transfer ban placed on the club to be overturned.

"We cannot see how they can keep the money and also continue with the embargo," he remarked. "We believe the embargo should be lifted immediately."

Mr Jacob revealed that Portsmouth are willing to seek arbitration should the 96-day restrictions stay in place.

He said a letter asking for the money was delivered to the English Premier League on Monday (January 18th), with the aim of setting up a meeting to discuss the matter on Tuesday.

The south coast club have been plagued by financial problems this season and recently failed to pay their players on schedule for the third time.
