Rotherham United look to progress with stadium bid

Rotherham United chairman Tony Stewart is hoping that the club will soon secure the land on which it can build a new ground.

According to the Yorkshire Post, Mr Stewart met with local council officials to discuss the Millers' plans for a stadium site close to the River Don yesterday (January 14th).

The League Two promotion contenders are currently playing at the Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield, having left the Millmoor ground in 2008 after failing to agree terms with the owners.

Mr Stewart said that a "verbal agreement" over the club's new stadium project is already in place.

"There are three parties involved - Rotherham United, the council and the private owners of the land - and all three parties have indicated they want to do this," he told the newspaper.

Rotherham United's agreement with the Football League states that the club must return to a stadium within the town boundaries before the 2012-13 season gets underway.

The South Yorkshire side, who face Accrington Stanley at the Crown Ground on Saturday, have not played since December 12th due to a series of postponements caused by the extreme weather conditions.
