Dunfermline have issued an apology to supporters after the club jeopardised their Scottish Cup campaign by fielding an ineligible player.

Defender Calum Woods featured as a substitute in the Fife outfit's 7-1 victory over Stenhousemuir on Saturday (January 9th) when he should have been serving a one-match suspension.

The Pars must now await the outcome of an emergency Scottish Football Association (SFA) meeting today (January 14th) to see what action will be taken against the club.

In a statement on Dunfermline's official website, manager Jim McIntyre described the error as "an administrative mistake that we hold our hands up for".

The former Reading and Dundee United player added: "We are deeply sorry and would like to take this opportunity to apologise for embarrassing the club and supporters."

Brechin City were thrown out of the Scottish Cup by the SFA in 2008 after fielding two ineligible players in a fourth-round match against Hamilton Academical.
