The English Premier League has confirmed that it is seeking its first official technology partner.
Described as "very exciting" by the league's marketing and sales director, Richard Masters, the new football sponsorship category should be in place for the beginning of the 2010-11 season and will initially run for three years.
According to BBC Sport, the new partner will help the league to offer fans more information and statistics about their favourite teams, using the latest technology to monitor player performance.
The news provider states that the English Premier League would prefer an "international brand" to fill the role, thereby helping to boost the competition's global profile.
"New sectors for Premier League sponsorship rarely arise and we think this opportunity is a very exciting one," Mr Masters commented.
The league has not created a new sponsorship category since 2002, when Budweiser was named its official beer partner.
Barclays recently opted to renew its title sponsorship agreement until the end of the 2012-13 season.
