A group of businessmen based in the far east are preparing to launch a takeover bid at Manchester United, it has been claimed.
Members of the Bangkok-based consortium have spent several months putting a deal together and plan to offer £1 billion to acquire the club from the Glazer family, according to the News of the World.
The report suggests that the English Premier League champions could be vulnerable to a takeover because their current owners are finding it increasingly difficult to service the club's debts.
Commenting on the takeover, a source told the publication: "All the finances are in place and they are ready to approach the Glazers."
Meanwhile, a separate report in the Times states that the interest from the far east group is believed to be "genuine" and "serious", although no formal approach has yet been made.
Despite furious protests from fans, Malcolm Glazer took complete control at Old Trafford in July 2005 after acquiring 98 per cent of the club's shares.
