A group of 12 soldiers received their service medals on the pitch at Elland Road on Saturday (December 5th), with fans of both Leeds United and Huddersfield Town providing a standing ovation.
Former players Peter Lorimer and Frank Worthington presented the medals at half-time in the West Yorkshire derby, while the servicemen were also given a tour of the stadium and met the Leeds United players.
The soldiers were all from 3rd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment and returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan last month, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports.
Captain Mally Birkett told the newspaper: "For the soldiers, it was a chance to meet their footballing heroes and as they've just been to Afghanistan, the players really enjoyed talking to them."
The regiment, which is based in Wiltshire but features many soldiers from Yorkshire, was involved with providing security measures in the run-up to Afghanistan's elections in August.
Huddersfield Town twice came from behind to ensure the League One fixture finished 2-2, with Jordan Rhodes scoring the visitors' second goal 12 minutes from time.
