A T-shirt featuring the message Save Our Museum recently appeared on display at the National Football Museum in Preston.
Bosses of the attraction have since ordered staff to remove the offending garment, which was made in protest against plans to move the attraction from Deepdale to Manchester, the Lancashire Evening Post reports.
The newspaper was responsible for producing the T-shirts and managed to get Preston North End players to wear them before their Carling Cup clash with Tottenham Hotspur in September.
Plans to relocate the museum to Manchester's Urbis exhibition centre have caused controversy in Preston, where the attraction has been based since it opened in February 2001.
One employee told the newspaper that the atmosphere at the museum is currently "very subdued".
He added: "The morale of the staff, especially in the front of the house, is very low. There is a veil of silence."
Last month, Preston North End legend Sir Tom Finney threatened to remove his personal memorabilia from the museum's collection if the relocation goes ahead.
