Football fans should keep ambition in check, says Bright

Mark Bright believes that some football fans should "accept their club's limitations" or face the consequences.

Writing in his football column for the Metro newspaper this week, the former Crystal Palace and Sheffield Wednesday striker claims that unchecked ambition can often get clubs into trouble.

Using Charlton Athletic as an example, Bright notes that manager Alan Curbishley left the south London outfit in 2006 because fans felt he had "taken the club as far as he could".

Three years down the line, Charlton Athletic are playing their football in League One, having been relegated from the Championship under Phil Parkinson last season.

"My point is, maybe fans need to be more realistic with their ambitions," Bright explains.

"Fans should be careful what they ask for, because change isn't always for the good."

The 47-year-old, who now works as a football pundit for the BBC, suggested that supporters of smaller clubs should accept that the English Premier League's Big Four are now "virtually impregnable" and instead focus on the cup competitions.
