Consortium 'submits bid for Southend United'

An unidentified consortium has tabled a bid to buy Southend United, it has been claimed.

The League One outfit face a High Court hearing over unpaid taxes on Wednesday (November 4th) and are believed to be on the verge of going into administration.

However, a report from BBC Essex indicates that a group of local businessmen have submitted a written offer for the club and are now waiting for a reply from chairman Ron Martin.

An unnamed source confirmed the extent of Southend United's football finance woes this week by revealing that the players have been paid on time just once so far this season.

He told the Essex Echo: "It has obviously made life hard for the players and management.

"At times this season the players have gone out to play when they haven't been paid."

The Shrimpers are currently tenth in the League One table following a 1-0 victory over Gillingham last Friday, but they will be docked ten points by the Football League if they go into administration.
