Sheffield United set for stadium expansion

The capacity of Bramall Lane will be increased to 44,500 if Sheffield United's plans for expansion are given the green light.

Local councillors are due to vote on the extension next week, with planning officers recently recommending the scheme for approval, the Sheffield Telegraph reports.

The Championship club have already received permission to add another 3,215 seats to the Shoreham Street Kop Stand and now hope to extend the Cherry Street South Stand by 6,670.

According to the planning officers, the South Stand will become the "front door" of the stadium once the new seating is added.

Their report acknowledged that the stadium enlargement is "part of the club's aspirations to create a FIFA-compliant stadium in support of Sheffield bid's to be a host city for the 2018 FIFA World Cup".

Earlier this month, rugby league side Sheffield Eagles announced plans to play their home matches at Bramall Lane next season as part of a ground-sharing agreement with Sheffield United.
