Campaigners 'still fighting' Bristol City stadium plans

A group of Bristol residents opposing plans to turn Ashton Gate into a supermarket have vowed to continue with their campaign, with Sainsbury's now replacing Tesco as the most likely owner of the stadium site.

The Bristol Evening Post reported on Saturday (October 24th) that Bristol City are believed to have struck a deal with Sainsbury's in a surprise move, as Tesco was initially lined up to move in at Ashton Gate.

Replacing Tesco with Sainsbury's is expected to please opponents of the development, as the firm plans to move an existing store to Ashton Gate from nearby rather than opening a new branch.

However, a statement from campaign group Berate revealed that it has yet to withdraw its objections.

"Until any of these details are confirmed and the current planning application is withdrawn, the Berate campaign will continue to object to the existing plan," it said.

Bristol City chairman Steve Lansdown has said that the club will be unable to build its new Ashton Vale stadium unless the current ground is sold for redevelopment.
