Ryan Giggs believes that the majority of top-flight footballers fully deserve their huge salaries.

The Manchester United star said that the amount of money in the sport justifies the massive pay packets of its key personnel, with some English Premier League players now earning more than £100,000 a week.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Giggs commanded a salary of just £120 a week when he turned professional at Old Trafford in 1990, but his weekly wage is now thought to be in the region of £75,000.

"There is plenty of money in the game but the majority of the players deserve it," the 35-year-old Welshman said.

He added: "There are a number of players that perhaps 20 years ago would not have got paid the money that they're getting now, but that is the way that football is."

FourFourTwo magazine recently estimated that Giggs is worth about £24 million, making him the fifth wealthiest player in British football behind David Beckham, Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand.

The Cardiff-born player received £6.5 million over a six-year period for endorsing Reebok and has also appeared in adverts for brands such as Givenchy, Fuji and Patek Philippe.
