Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal has been identified as the wealthiest investor in British football.

The Football Rich List, published annually by FourFourTwo magazine, puts the Queens Park Rangers co-owner at the top of the football finance tree with a fortune of £18.4 billion.

Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour takes second place with £17 billion, with Roman Abramovich, Joe Lewis and Stan Kroenke rounding off the top five.

With a personal fortune estimated at £7.8 billion, Russian tycoon Abramovich has ploughed about £600 million into Chelsea since 2003, while Lewis is worth about £2.5 billion and owns a £57 million stake in Tottenham Hotspur, the magazine reports.

Kroenke, whose net worth is estimated at £2.079 billion, recently acquired more shares in Arsenal to increase his stake to 28.7 per cent.

FourFourTwo has also published a list of the top 20 wealthiest players in the UK, with David Beckham topping the chart on £125 million.

The four other members of the top five all currently play for Manchester United - Michael Owen (£38 million), Wayne Rooney (£37 million), Rio Ferdinand (£30 million) and Ryan Giggs (£24 million).
