Newcastle United fans aim to buy share

A group of Newcastle United fans have formally launched their bid to acquire a share in the Championship club.

The Newcastle United Supporters Trust (NUST) said that £20 million has already been pledged to the cause by various businesses and individuals.

With the constructive dismissal case involving former manager Kevin Keegan now over, Mike Ashley is again rumoured to be on the verge of selling the Magpies for £100 million.

The NUST's initial aim is to purchase a minority stake in the club, although it ultimately hopes to own Newcastle United outright.

Spokesperson for the trust Mark Jensen told BBC Newcastle: "I've been involved for over 20 years with supporter groups and fanzines, but this is the one with the most legs.

"We've got the financial community in Newcastle involved checking out the proposals and we can take it onto a wider audience if everything looks like a goer."

Local businessman Barry Moat is thought to be the current frontrunner to buy the club, although media reports have stated that four other groups are also in talks to take over at St James' Park.
