Football fans warned over Angola travel arrangements

The Foreign Office has warned British football fans to exercise caution when visiting Angola for the Africa Cup of Nations in January.

Thousands of supporters will be heading to the former Portuguese colony for the tournament, with four cities - Luanda, Cabinda, Benguela and Lubango - due to host the games.

Fans have been advised to travel around the country only "in the company of persons or organisations experienced in local conditions" and avoid certain areas of the capital Luanda after dark.

Although claiming that most visits to Angola are "trouble-free", the Foreign Office said that conditions have the potential to be "difficult and dangerous".

Angola was recently given the green light to continue with its preparation for the tournament following an inspection of its stadiums by the Confederation of African Football.

English-based players due to take part in the Africa Cup of Nations include Arsenal's Emmanuel Eboue and Chelsea trio Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou and Michael Essien.
