Old Firm 'should stay in Scotland'

Chief executive of the Scottish Premier League Neil Doncaster has said that the departure of Celtic and Rangers would be disastrous for Scottish football.

Speaking to the Daily Record, he claimed that taking the country's two biggest clubs out of the equation is likely to have major financial implications for the rest of the game in Scotland.

Bolton Wanderers chairman Phil Gartside recently proposed a new-look English Premier League in which Glasgow's Old Firm would play south of the border and his plans will be discussed at a league meeting in November.

However, Doncaster told the newspaper: "The Scottish Premier League is blessed with legends of the game. It is about history and tradition and my job is to maximise the income that we can earn from marketing the huge brands within it.

"On that basis we need to have our biggest clubs still in the Scottish Premier League and exploit their value."

Doncaster left his previous role as chief executive of Norwich City following the club's relegation to League One in May.
