Footballers deserve high wages, says Neville

Manchester United star Gary Neville has defended the huge salaries enjoyed by players in the English Premier League.

As club captain at Old Trafford, the 34-year-old is a high earner at one of the world's richest football clubs.

He told the Sun that the global popularity of England's top division, which is watched by millions of people around the world, justifies the astronomical wages paid to many of its players.

"Others earn billions selling rights and 75,000 [people] come to watch us every week [at Old Trafford]," Neville commented.

"There's a product there that people love. Fans are crucial but without the player you have nothing."

Neville has spent his entire career at Manchester United, having joined the club as an apprentice in 1991.

He escaped with a warning from the FA this week after celebrating in front of Manchester City fans in the closing stages of his side's dramatic 4-3 derby victory on Sunday (September 20th).
