Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier will not face a police investigation into his role in an alleged spread betting scam, it has emerged.

The former Saints star shocked football fans by revealing in his autobiography that he gambled on the time of the first throw-in during an English Premier League game between Southampton and Wimbledon in 1995.

Le Tissier said that he attempted to kick the ball out of play straight after the kick-off, but his plans were foiled when oblivious team-mate Neil Shipperley kept it on the pitch.

Despite these admissions, a spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said that a full investigation of the matter "would not be in the public interest and does not represent appropriate use of police resources".

In his book Taking Le Tiss, the former footballer claims that he has never again tried spread betting since the incident at Wimbledon.

Born in Guernsey, Le Tissier made over 440 appearances for Southampton and won eight England caps during his career.
