Don Foster, the Liberal Democrat shadow sports secretary, has voiced concerns that many football fans are still being priced out of the British game.

Responding to the English Premier League's revised financial regulations, Mr Foster welcomed the new rules but claimed that the nation's top-flight clubs still have much work to do.

"Today's announcement is a step in the right direction but there is still a long way to go," the Bath MP said.

"Many of football's most loyal fans are now priced out of the game or are unable to get tickets because of tiny allocations, while the wealthiest teams have a stranglehold," he added.

Under the new financial rules, clubs will be required to show independently audited accounts to the English Premier League by March 1st each year to prove they are operating with financial stability.

From next season, each English Premier League club will also have to name eight "home-grown" players in their first-team squad.
